Blowing out sprinklers is where a professional
will attach an air compressor to the system and literally "blow out" the
water from the lines, pipes and other parts.
A professional knows how much volume and pressure to use when
blowing out sprinklers, as many do-it-yourselfers typically use an
insufficient volume of air and after having forced some water
out, the air will ride over the top of the remaining water. This results
in the remaining water draining into low spots and subjecting the
system to freeze damage.
Sprinkler pipes and backflow assemblies are at risk of freezing
and breaking when
temperatures drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Immediate damage
can occur to
exposed pipes and sprinkler apparatus with the first freeze of
winter. Further damage
can result as extended freezing temperatures and wind chill
conditions cause the soil
to freeze at the same depth as the underground pipes. In many
cases, homeowners are not aware that their pipes have sustained damage
until they begin watering in the
spring and discover leaks in their yards!
Not every company uses the same equipment. There are many types of air compressors, we use a diesel tow-behind compressor that has an air output of 210 CFM. The pressure is not excessive, but the amount of air is constant even with a large commercial irrigation system. When we arrive, we turn off the water supply to the sprinkler system, open any system drains, connect the air compressor to the system, blow out all of the lines, and open any drains on the outside of the house. Lastly we set all valves on the pressure vacuum breaker to the positions that they need to be in for the freezing weather.
A properly winterized sprinkler blowout can be the difference between an easy spring start up and weeks if not months of problems the following season.QUESTIONS:

Q: How often should I have my sprinklers blown out?
A: You only need to have your sprinkler system winterized once a year. Make sure to winterize your
system before the seasons first hard freeze. There after there is no guarentees or warranty that all
the water can be flushed out of your system and you will not sustain costly damage. Just because
you did not blow them out during the first hard freeze, get them blown out as soon as possible.
The longer it freezes outside the farther down the freeze travels in the soil. If you do not blow
them out you are virtually guarenteeing a disaster which will cost you alot of money to repair. In
some cases the entire sprinkler system may have to be replaced.
Q: Do you offer a service to come and turn my system back on in the spring?
A: Yes, Spring Sprinkler System Start-up/Tune-up - $45
